Charlotte – Global law firm K&L Gates LLP welcomes partner David Easwaran and a team of six patent agents and technical specialists to the firm’s Intellectual Property practice area. Easwaran and his colleagues join K&L Gates from Womble Bond Dickinson LLP, with Easwaran resident in K&L Gates’ Charlotte office and others from his team based in Boston, Charlotte, and Washington, D.C.
With a focus on software patent matters, Easwaran has significant experience in the various facets of patent practice, from portfolio development and transactional matters through contentious proceedings such as post-grant proceedings, pre-litigation interactions, and litigation. In addition to his work in private practice, Easwaran served as in-house counsel for one of the world’s largest banks, where he provided IP support for more than 40,000 employees, including those in data science, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and quantum computing roles.
Easwaran’s understanding of the IP issues surrounding the financial services industry is supplemented by the pragmatic knowledge he gained as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he reviewed financial services patent applications. Along with his diverse experience handling IP matters in the financial services sector, Easwaran also routinely investigates the patent risks and opportunities presented by innovations in AI, machine learning, and quantum computing.
“Dave’s tenacity to stay on the cutting-edge of sophisticated software and technology patent matters will serve clients across our globally integrated practice area,” said Bob Barrett, a leader of K&L Gates’ Intellectual Property practice area. “Dave and his team’s experience with IP strategy across public and private sectors demonstrates a deep knowledge of issues that will enrich the firm’s practice greatly.”
K&L Gates’ IP practice boasts more than 250 lawyers and professionals – including more than 100 registered patent lawyers, agents, and technology specialists with technical or advanced science degrees, nearly 30 with doctorates – who devote their practices to helping clients establish, enforce, and leverage their intellectual property rights worldwide. The practice filed more than 4,750 patent applications and 2,350 trademarks worldwide in 2022.
“We are very excited to have Dave join our Charlotte office,” commented Jared Mobley, managing partner of K&L Gates’ Charlotte office. “Dave and his team provide a unique technical skill set and experience that will benefit the entire firm.”
Easwaran’s arrival follows the additions of IP partner Ryan Keech in Los Angeles and counsel Shu Chen in Washington, D.C., earlier this year and partners Hannah Koyfman and David Lu and their 10-person patent team in Boston, as well as partner Collin Rose in Houston, in 2022. As its IP practice continues to grow, K&L Gates remains the only globally financially integrated law firm able to offer clients IP services across four continents.
