K&L Gates Announces New Firm Leaders, Effective March 2017
19 September 2016
Pittsburgh - Global law firm K&L Gates LLP has selected Michael S. Caccese and James R. Segerdahl to succeed Peter J. Kalis in the positions of Chairman of the Management Committee and Global Managing Partner, respectively. Caccese and Segerdahl will assume their responsibilities on March 1, 2017, upon the conclusion of Kalis’ term in February, and will work with Kalis to ensure a smooth transition in leadership during the coming months.
After a two-month deliberative process commencing in early July, K&L Gates’ 75-partner global Management Committee unanimously recommended Caccese and Segerdahl during a period of partner consultation. With a positive response from partners in the firm’s offices on five continents, the Management Committee then finalized the appointments through a unanimous vote.
Kalis stated: “Mike and Jim are among our most accomplished lawyers and leaders. They understand the firm’s business, its markets, its practices, and its personnel. They hail from two of our strongest global practices — Mike, from investment management, and Jim, from insurance coverage — and their service as vice chairmen of the firm has been universally recognized by our partners as brilliant, dedicated, and selfless. I know them, moreover, to be extraordinary human beings who will perpetuate the values upon which this firm is based well into the future. They have the firm’s complete confidence.”
Caccese, who will serve as a non-executive Chairman of the Management Committee, currently holds the position of Vice Chairman for Practice Management and is a global leader of the firm’s financial services practice. Widely recognized as among the most distinguished lawyers in the global investment management industry, Caccese served in both in-house and governmental capacities prior to his joining K&L Gates’ Boston office in 2001.
“I am honored to have been chosen as the firm’s Chairman,” commented Caccese. “I owe much to all of the hard work and strategic planning Pete Kalis, the Management Committee, and many of my partners have done to make K&L Gates a preeminent global law firm. I look forward to working with Jim Segerdahl and the firm’s Management Committee in maintaining K&L Gates’ culture of collegiality and entrepreneurship and in leading this great law firm to the next level of growth and client service.”
As Global Managing Partner, Segerdahl will serve as the firm’s chief executive officer. For the past decade, Segerdahl has acted as K&L Gates’ General Counsel and Secretary to the Management Committee, adding the duties of firm Vice Chairman in 2013. He joined K&L Gates’ Pittsburgh office in 1987 directly out of law school and is a co-founder of its insurance coverage practice as well as a co-author of a leading treatise in the insurance field (Policyholder’s Guide to the Law of Insurance Coverage).
Segerdahl stated: “Mike Caccese and I have enormous shoes to fill in succeeding Pete Kalis. We are fortunate to be supported by the truly outstanding partners and other personnel in our offices around the world. We look forward to working with all of them as we embark on this great law firm’s next chapter and to deliver the seamless, cost-effective, and high quality legal services that our clients expect and deserve. It is an honor to have the opportunity to help K&L Gates do so going forward as its Global Managing Partner.”
