K&L Gates Among Winners in The American Lawyer’s Global Legal Awards
19 July 2016
Pittsburgh - The American Lawyer has named K&L Gates LLP among the winners in the publication’s fourth annual Global Legal Awards for the firm’s highly successful representation of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in a technology dispute that ultimately resulted in one of the largest patent infringement settlements ever reported.
The firm will be recognized, along with CMU and Orrick, Sutcliffe & Herrington, as the winners of the “Global Dispute of the Year: U.S. Litigation (IP)” category of the Global Legal Awards during a dinner taking place in September in New York City. The awards recognize the law firms and in-house counsel who played a substantial role in the most distinguished international work across a wide range of disciplines.
Seattle partner Douglas Greenswag and Pittsburgh partner Patrick McElhinny led the K&L Gates team that in 2012 obtained a $1.17 billion jury verdict for the university against Bermuda-based chipmaker Marvell Technology Group Ltd. and Marvell Semiconductor Inc. That award represented both the largest verdict of the year and one of the largest of all time for a claim of patent infringement, earning it a “Verdict of the Year” honor from The National Law Journal. The case was settled earlier this year. Like the initial verdict, the settlement was one of the largest ever reported in a patent infringement case, with McElhinny and Greenswag being named “Litigators of the Week” by The AmLaw Litigation Daily for their leading roles in the case.
In 2014, K&L Gates was also the recipient of a Global Legal Award for “Global CSR Initiative of the Year” for the firm’s annual Global Day of Service initiative — a week-long volunteer effort by K&L Gates lawyers and staff focused on serving charitable organizations in cities and regions across five continents in which the firm has offices.
